Rao has to retire after reaching second straight final

(October 25) American prospect Sunitha Rao (18) experienced an unfortunate end to her outstanding two-week run at the $25,000 Challenger tournament in Rockhampton, Australia. After reaching the finals at the Queensland hard court event of the Uncle Tobys Tour, the ITMS Sports client was forced to retire with a glute injury in the second set of the championship match.

Just a day earlier, Rao had reached her second final in as many weeks after defeating doubles partner Cindy Watson (AUS) 6-3, 1-6 and 6-1. Sunday’s match also marked the second time the young American saw her title hopes come to an end against top seed Evie Dominikovic, the former Top 70 and Australian Fed Cup player.

Still, by recording her second finals appearance of the year, Rao has now advanced to the semi-finals or further in five of the tournaments she has entered and looks to break into the Top 200 in next week's WTA Tour rankings.

In doubles, Rao and Watson fell to the top seed Australian Duo

(October 8) ITMS Sports client Anna Smashnova’s run at the $650,000 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Filderstadt (GER) was prematurely halted in her second round encounter with Fabiola Zuluaga (WTA 25) of Colombia. The injury marks the latest setback for Smashnova, who had just returned to form after four injury-plagued months. It is unclear how much time she will miss this time around, and it remains to be seen whether Israel’s number one player will be able to return in time for next week’s Kremlin Cup in Moscow ($1,300,000).

ITMS Sports clients back in tennis action in Belgium and Korea

(September 27) Two of ITMS Sports' tennis clients return to action on the WTA Tour this week.

Tatiana Perebiynis plays in her first tournament since the US Open at the Gaz de France Stars tournament in Hasselt, Belgium. The 21-year old Ukrainian faces a stiff test in the first round against the tournament’s sixth seeded Silvia Farina Elia of Italy. Perebiynis is seeded second in doubles together with Australian Lisa McShea.

18-year old Sunitha Rao of the United States finds herself in top form this week having qualified for her first WTA Tour event of the year in Seoul, Korea. She easily handled her three qualifying matches at the Olympic Park Tennis Courts over the weekend never once losing more than three games a set to earn a spot in the 2004 Hansol Korea Open Tennis Championships.

Rao will now face Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia in the first round on Tuesday. The 25-year old Slovakian has been steadily ranked in the 20s and 30s in the world for most of her ten years on tour but slipped recently to her current world ranking of 79. The match should prove to be a good test for the American prodigy as she gets to measure herself against one of the most experienced players on the WTA Tour. The winner of this first round encounter will earn a center court appearance against the tournament’s biggest draw and top seed Maria Sharapova.

The 17-year old Wimbledon champion already has the entire nation in a tennis frenzy and tournament organizers hope that the Russian’s appeal will spark a lasting tennis fever in Korea. All of her matches will be telecast nationwide on KBS Channel 9.

Bringing the Russian star, ranked seventh in the world, to the inaugural Korea Open has been the Korea Tennis Association's most coveted project as part of its latest efforts to increase the sport's popularity. "It wasn't easy to get her, but I believe this will be a tremendous boost for the sport in this country," said Lee Jin-Soo, director of the Korea Open. The weeklong event has already shown signs of being wildly successful. Of the 50,000 tickets made available online, nearly 70 percent were sold as of last Thursday.

Though losses for ITMS Sports duo

(September 3) The 2004 US Open, the fourth and last Grand Slam event of the year, is underway. Since Monday, the world’s best tennis players are battling it out on the courts of the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.

Among the 128 players in the women’s draw were also ITMS Sports Clients Tatiana Perebiynis and Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi. However, their stints at the world’s largest tennis tournament were short-lived, as both suffered through tough three set losses.

Twenty-one year old Ukrainian No. 1 Tatiana Perebiynis exited the Open on Monday after a heartbreaking three set loss to American wild card Angela Haynes. Perebiynis, who had shown good form throughout the summer, was unable to convert on four match points before falling to Haynes 6-7, 6-1, and 7-6. A young American prospect, Haynes than backed up her outstanding performance with a dominating 6-2, 6-3 victory over No. 22 seed Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria.

Another seed to fall in the first round was No. 24 seed Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi. Israel’s No. 1 player came up just short in her three set loss to Japanese product Shinobu Asagoe (WTA 62). Despite the loss, Smashnova-Pistolesi’s valiant effort in the first two sets gave plenty of reasons to be encouraged, before heat and humidity took their toll on the injury plagued Israeli.

The 2004 US Open will continue today with second and third round matches. The women’s final will be played next Saturday, better known as Super Saturday, the biggest day in professional tennis every year.

The 21-year-old Ukrainian defeated Sandra Kleinova 7-5, 6-3 in the semis and has yet to lose a set this week. She will play No. 3 seeded Alicia Molik in the finals on Sunday.

Alicia Molik exhibited strong play with a 7-5, 6-3 win over No.2 seed Silvia Farina Elia to advance to her second WTA Tour final this year.

Sammy Sosa ties Reggie Jackson on home run list

(August 5) It had been a night of uncharacteristic small ball in Denver, as the Rockies led the Cubs by three in the seventh inning.

But Sammy Sosa doesn't play small ball.

With men on first and second, Sosa clubbed his 563rd home run, tying Reggie Jackson for eighth on the all-time home run list. The 437-foot shot off Scott Dohmann into the left-field bleachers also tied the game.

"It's an honor to tie Reggie Jackson, no question about it," Sosa added. "I never would think I would tie Reggie Jackson. Mr. October. He's the man."

The home run sparked a series of events later in the inning. Dohmann and manager Clint Hurdle were both ejected when Dohmann threw too close to the next batter, Aramis Ramirez. Reliever Steve Reed then came in to finish the inning and allowed a single to Ramirez, who then moved to second on Derrek Lee's single. Todd Walker then drove Ramirez home on a double, sparking the Cubs to a victory that moved them into sole possession of first place in the Wild Card race.

The homer was Sosa's 24th of the year, and with nearly two months left in the season, Sosa can now set his sights on Harmon Killebrew, next on the all-time list with 573.

"I'm not really looking for that," Sosa said of the next career milestone. His sights are set on the immediate future, helping his team to protect and expand their newly claimed Wild Card lead.
"I want to go up there and contribute, try to win some games every day and everything will be OK," Sosa said.
